"Around noon we evacuated the mail room and several adjoining rooms after a suspicious package was found," said police spokesman Frans van Rijnswou. "The package turned out to contain a kitchen timer ... As members of parliament do not often need kitchen timers for their work we are investigating who sent it," Van Rijnswou said.
The inner courtyard of parliament, normally open to the public, was also evacuated and a bomb squad and security forces were called in.
