The Webby Awards, dubbed "the online Oscars," are awards for Internet performance sponsored by an organization called "The Academy." It is made up of almost 500 members, including musician David Bowie, Internet co-creator Vint Cerf, political columnist Arianna Huffington and Oracle chairman Larry Ellison.
This year, Webby nominees include the Web site movabletype.org, for best practices; livejournal.com for community, and meetup.com and moveon.org for their innovative ways of organizing people worldwide.
"The Web is increasingly being used as a tool to empower people, not just politically but also technologically, spiritually, and in countless other ways," said Maya Draisin, executive director of The Academy.
The public can vote online through May 23 for favorite their Web sites at webbyawards.com/peoplesvoice/.
